Senior Spotlight: Sofia Slaman
3 Years Dancing at Sharon’s Studio of Dance & Music
$90 Scholarship
Sofia has been a student at our studio for 3 years. At her final recital, she will be awarded a $90 scholarship. Sofia will be attending Syracuse University in the fall to pursue a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Acting. Read Sofia’s senior dance essay below.
Robin Williams once said, “You’re only given a little spark of madness. You mustn’t lose it.” This quote reminds me of why I dance. Dance allows me to express myself in ways words cannot. I began my dance journey at a young age. I was inspired to take dance to help my theatre background. I took dance classes at various studios but never felt at home until I came to Sharon’s Dance Studio.
I started taking classes here back in September 2019. I took ballet and jazz. At that time, I
was 15, a freshman in high school who lacked confidence. I was nervous about taking my first
class. I did not have much experience in ballet as I do in jazz. However, I am beyond grateful
that I set my nerves aside as I developed confidence in years to come and made life-lasting
friendships. Even though the pandemic disrupted the last half of my first year at Sharon’s, I knew I picked the right studio. After that year, I took tap along with ballet and jazz. I am honored to have met an instructor who changed my life. In the last three years, my classes were taught by Miss Janine. I have so much to thank her for. She was so welcoming, patient, and kind towards me. She helped me become a better dancer and always encouraged me to do my best. My overall experience at Sharon’s Dance Studio has been amazing. I would not trade it for anything.
I am thankful for all the skills and techniques I learned at Sharon’s Dance Studio. I will forever cherish the memories I made there. I feel happy to know that I can always return home. I am excited to announce that I will attend Syracuse University for a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Acting. Because of the supportive faculty and classmates I met at Sharon’s Dance Studio, I feel confident about what the future holds.
