The History of Hip Hop Dance

Updated: Dec 4, 2023

Hip hop dance originated in African American and Latino communities in the Bronx, New York City in the 1970s. It was influenced by various styles such as street dancing, breaking, popping, locking, and funk. The pioneers of hip hop dance were DJ Kool Herc, Afrika Bambaataa, and Grandmaster Flash who popularized it through their music and performances.

Hip hop dance quickly spread throughout the United States and the world, becoming a form of self-expression and cultural identity for many communities. In the 1980s and 1990s, hip hop dance gained mainstream popularity through music videos, movies, and television shows.

Today, hip hop dance continues to evolve and incorporate new styles and influences. It has become a global phenomenon with competitions, workshops, and festivals held around the world. It remains a powerful tool for self-expression, community building, and cultural exchange.
